A. LTO 4 drives require LTO 4 media. LTO
4 is backward read compatible
with LTO 2 media & backward read &
write compatible with LTO 3 media.
LTO 4 drives utilize current LTO universal
cleaning cartridges.
Q. What ISV, OS and HBA's can be utilized
with the LTO 4 drives?
A. Support varies by ISV, OS and HBA, check

A. Yes, mixed media is supported.

A. Possibly. Library firmware or control
software (e.g. ACSLS for L8500)
must typically be upgraded as well so that
the library unit can
recognize and manage the new tape technology.

A. No, installation is not included in
the price of the drives. Make

Upgrade to the new Sun StorageTek LTO4 tape
drive and save 15 percent. Sun StorageTek
LTO drives are designed for midrange tape
automation environments.
These drives feature the write once, read
many (WORM) capability and can store up
to 800 gigabytes of native data on a single
cartridge. Dynamic rate matching and dual
mode compression capabilities extend the
life of the drive. The LTO 4 drive moves
data at rates as high as 120 megabytes per
second uncompressed.
Trade in a Sun StorageTek LT01, LT02 or
LT03 tape drive and receive 15 percent off
the list price of a new Sun StorageTek LTO4
drive.
Sun StorageTekTM LTO 4 FC tape drives are
now available for the Sun StorageTekTM SL8500,
SL500 and L180/L700/L1400 tape libraries.
LTO 4 tape drives offer increased native
capacity and performance over LTO 2 and
3 drive technologies.
The LTO 4 drives are backward read and
write compatibility with LTO3 and backward
read compatibility with LTO2 products. LTO
4 drives utilize current LTO universal cleaning
cartridges. Library firmware or control
software may need to be upgraded so the
library unit can recognize and manage the
new tape technology.
LTO 4 has a 800GB/cartridge native capacity,
which provides the ability to back up more
data at twice the transfer rate to a single
cartridge. LTO 4 media length is 820 meters.
The 120MB/sec native throughput writes
and reads at double the speed of LTO 3,
requiring less time for backups.
Trade-ins of LTO 1,2 and 3 tape drive options
for the Sun StorageTek tape libraries under
the Sun Upgrade Advantage program will be
made available soon.

to insert a cartridge in the drive,
load the tape and prepare to read, write
or search. Phase 2: Average file access
time — the amount of time required to
search from the beginning of the tape

time. Phase 3: Maximum rewind time —
the amount of time required to rewind
the tape from the end to the beginning
of the tape. The average rewind time
is the time to rewind a tape from the
